Create your custom field

You can create custom fields for your companies, people, and leads in Nutshell. Use these for fields that don't already exist in Nutshell, like internal customer order numbers or important dates.

In the Setup section under "Custom fields," click + Add custom field, under the gray header for lead custom fields, company custom fields, or people custom fields, to choose where the field will be created.

You'll be presented with a popup box to name your field and to choose the type.

Types of custom fields

Leads:

• Text - this field can store one line of text (225 characters is the max limit)
• Long Text - this field can store paragraphs of text
• Currency - this field will display text in monetary amounts
• Date
• Email
• Decision - selecting this field will allow you to set up a multiple choice option, such as Yes/No
• Address
• Phone
• URL

Companies and people:

Fields not normally visible (leads)

Use this type of field to document information you do not need to see on every lead page. The field will not show up in the lead unless there's data in it—the only way to add data to it is by importing.

Decision fields

A decision field is a drop-down list that you create. You can add as many options as you want to a decision field.

Make the field "Multiple choice" to allow your reps to select several options.

Add information in the field

Your custom fields will appear on the right side of company and people pages.

In leads, the custom fields can appear in the center of the lead or in the sidebar, depending on where you created that custom field. You can edit these fields directly and they will be saved immediately.

Add the custom field as a column on your lists

You can add the custom fields as a column on the companies, people, and leads tabs by clicking the "Columns" icon shown below. You can also add the custom field as a column under Reports > Custom if the field is on a lead or company.

FAQ

How many custom fields can I have?

This is determined by your subscription level—you have access to 25 custom fields with Nutshell Foundation, 50 custom fields with Nutshell Pro, and an unlimited number of custom fields with an Enterprise level subscription.

Can I change a custom field after it was created?

You can change the custom field name after it has been created, but the field type cannot be changed. Note that if you change the name, any data previously entered into that field will be lost.

Can I report on custom fields?

You can sort and filter by custom fields within the companies, people, and leads list pages. You cannot filter by custom fields within custom reports.

Can I change the currency type for custom fields?

Users cannot change the currency type for custom fields.

Can I import to custom fields?

Yes! First, create the custom field in Nutshell. Then, add it as a column in your CSV. The only custom field type that you cannot import into are address and currency custom fields on leads. Learn more about how to format your file here.
