VisitorIQ: Convert website visitors to leads

See which companies are visiting your website, match them to your ideal customer profiles and key pages, and add the best fits to Nutshell with VisitorIQ.

Written by Will Gordon

VisitorIQ is part of the Nutshell IQ add-on. Each Nutshell plan comes with 10 free IQ credits per month that can be used across VisitorIQ, PeopleIQ, and ProspectorIQ.

VisitorIQ is a powerful feature designed to answer the age-old question of who is visiting your website by providing insight into both the companies and the individuals working for those companies that are exploring your website, even before they fill out a form. You’ll have access to valuable company and people information like revenue, number of employees, job title, LinkedIn profile, contact details, and more.

VisitorIQ removes the need to blindly approach companies and hope for a sale. Now, you have the power to proactively target key individuals who are already showing an interest in your product or service.

Your sales team will be able to quickly identify which people to reach out to and what approach to take, resulting in more successful sales conversations.

Getting started

Open VisitorIQ from Marketing, under Website.

The page has four tabs:

  • Visitors lists the companies that have visited your website

  • Customer profiles is where you describe the kinds of companies you want to sell to

  • Key pages is where you save the pages on your website you want to keep an eye on

  • Settings is where you choose which people VisitorIQ shows for each company, and block pages from your results

Here’s how it works:

  • Install the tracking snippet. This is a small piece of code on your website that lets VisitorIQ see which companies visit.

  • Tell VisitorIQ what a good-fit company looks like. You do this by creating customer profiles.

  • Pick the pages that matter most. These are your key pages, such as your pricing page.

Once set up:

  • Review your Visitors list. VisitorIQ flags the companies that match your profiles and key pages.

  • Act on what you find. Add the best fits to Nutshell, or archive the rest.

Install your tracking snippet

VisitorIQ can only see who visits your website once the Nutshell tracking snippet is installed. The tracking snippet is a small piece of code that you add to your website. Open the Tracking snippet menu at the top right of VisitorIQ. For step-by-step instructions on adding the snippet to your website, read more here.

Create customer profiles

A customer profile is a description of the companies you want to sell to. You give the profile a name, then choose details such as industry, company size, revenue, and region. VisitorIQ uses those details to find the visiting companies that fit, and flags them on your Visitors list so you can spot your best-fit companies at a glance.

For example, you might create a profile called Professional Services ICP for professional, scientific, and technical services companies with 1-50 or 51-200 employees, at least $1M in revenue, in the United States or Canada. Any visiting company that fits those details gets flagged. You can create as many profiles as you need, such as one for each type of customer you sell to.

To create a customer profile:

  1. Open the Customer profiles tab in VisitorIQ.

  2. Choose Add profile.

3. The New customer profile dialog will open, where you will be able to set the following:

  • Profile name: a name that helps you recognize this group of companies, such as Professional Services ICP. This is the only required field.

  • Industries: search for the industries you want.

  • # of employees: check the company sizes you want: 1-50, 51-200, 201-500, 501-1,000, or 1,001+.

  • Minimum revenue: choose the lowest revenue you want to see: $1M+, $5M+, $10M+, or $50M+.

  • Region: check the regions you want: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, EU, or APAC.

4. Choose Save profile. Choose Cancel to close the dialog without saving.

Your new profile appears in the Ideal customer profiles list, with its name, industries, number of employees, minimum revenue, regions, and when it was created.

Manage your profiles

From a profile's row menu you can See matches, Edit profile, or Remove profile.

  • See matches opens the Visitors list filtered to the companies that fit that profile

  • Edit profile lets you change the profile's details

  • Remove profile deletes the profile

Add key pages

A key page is a page on your website that you want to keep an eye on, such as your pricing page or a demo request page. When a company visits one of your key pages, VisitorIQ flags it on your Visitors list, so you can see which companies are showing interest in the pages that matter most.

To add a key page:

  1. Open the Key pages tab in VisitorIQ.

  2. Choose Add key page.

  3. Enter your page details. On New key page, enter a Page name and the Webpage URL.

  4. Choose Save page. Nutshell saves the URL without UTM parameters.

You can save up to 15 key pages. Your saved pages are listed with their name, URL, number of views, and when they were created.

Manage your key pages

  • See matches opens the Visitors list filtered to the companies that visited that page

  • Edit page changes the page name. To use a different URL, remove the page and add it again

  • Remove page deletes it

Choose which people VisitorIQ shows you

When you open a company on your Visitors list, VisitorIQ shows you the people who work there. On the Settings tab, you choose which of those people appear.

People criteria

Once a company is worth a look, your people criteria decide which of its people VisitorIQ shows you to add. They never filter the company list. Choose from:

  • Management level: C-level, Director, Entry, Manager, Owner, Partner, Senior, Training, Unpaid, and VP

  • Job field: Customer Service, Design, Education, Engineering, Finance, Health, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing, Media, Operations, Public Relations, Real Estate, Sales, and Trades

  • Contact information: Must have an email address, Must have a phone number, and Must have a LinkedIn URLWhen you open a company on your Visitors list, VisitorIQ shows you the people who work there. On the Settings tab, you choose which of those people appear.

For example, check Director under Management level and Sales under Job field to see sales directors, and check Must have an email address to see only the people with an email on file.

URL blocklist

Use the URL blocklist to leave out companies that have visited certain pages, such as a careers page. Companies that visited any of the URLs you add, or their subpages, are excluded. You can add up to 10 URLs.

  1. Enter a URL in the box, for example https://example.com/careers.

  2. Choose Add.

Review your Visitors list

Your Visitors list is where you'll spend most of your time in VisitorIQ. It shows the companies that have visited your website. It opens on Not added, so you see the companies that aren't in Nutshell yet. Switch that filter to Added or All visitors when you need to see the rest.

For each company, you can see:

  • Company name

  • # of Visits

  • # of Employees

  • Region

  • Time on site

  • First visit and Last visit

  • Channel

  • Industry

  • Revenue, and more

Spot the companies that match

Small badges on each row show you why a company is worth a look:

  • Under the company name, Customer profiles matched shows how many of your profiles the company fits

  • Under the number of visits, Key pages visited shows how many of your key pages it opened

  • Under the number of employees, a match badge shows how many people at the company fit your people criteria

Narrow down your list

Use the filters at the top of the list to focus on the companies you care about. You can filter by customer profile or key page, or search for a visitor. You can also filter by Last visit, Channel, Time on site, and more.

See company details and people

Open a company to see its details and the people who work there in the sidebar. You don't need a credit to view any of this.

Add Company, People, Leads to Nutshell

When you find a company you want to work with, add it to Nutshell. You can also add the people who work there and create a lead for the company. Select one or more companies that are not in Nutshell yet and choose Add companies.

You can:

  • Also create a new lead per company, and pick the pipeline

  • Also add people from each company (up to five people per company, based on your people filters)

  • Add tags to each company and Add tags to each person

Companies already in Nutshell are skipped. Adding a company or its people to Nutshell uses a credit. Viewing the visitor does not. The window shows how many credits the selection could use and how many you have left this month.

Your sales team can then use this information to identify and approach the companies and the key individuals that they’d like to target.

Archive companies you don't need

If a company isn't a fit, you can archive it to remove it from your VisitorIQ list. Archiving doesn't delete a company that's already in Nutshell. Companies that have already been added are skipped.

To archive one company: open the company and choose Archive. To archive several companies:

  1. Select the rows you want to archive on the Visitors list.

  2. Choose Archive.

  3. Confirm Archive visitors.

Each Nutshell plan comes with 10 free unlocks per month. You can add more to your plan for an additional monthly cost. Learn more here.
