Want to know who’s visiting your site? Start by adding the Nutshell tracking snippet

Connect your website to Nutshell and unlock powerful features like lead tracking, website analytics, and more—all from one simple snippet.

The Nutshell tracking snippet is a single piece of code you add to your website. Once installed, it powers a suite of features that help you understand who’s visiting your site, how they got there, and what they did before becoming a lead.

Unlike third-party tracking tools like Google Analytics, the data collected by the Nutshell tracking snippet is stored in your CRM and belongs to you.

What does the Nutshell tracking snippet do?

Once installed, the snippet powers several features in Nutshell:

  • Nutshell Analytics: View an overview of your website traffic and visitor sources.

  • Lead activity tracking: See what your leads were doing on your site before they submitted a form

  • VisitorIQ: Identify companies visiting your website

  • Nutshell Forms & Connected Forms: Automatically link form submissions from native and external forms

  • Lead attribution: Understand where your leads are coming from (e.g., paid ads, social media)

These features work together to give you a complete picture of how your website contributes to lead generation and sales.

Who can use it?

  • The Nutshell tracking snippet is available to all customers.

  • Website traffic insights are available on Nutshell Pro plans.

  • VisitorIQ and lead attribution features require the snippet to be embedded and active.

How to get started

In Nutshell, go to Marketing > Setup > Tracking snippet

You’ll find a guided three-step setup flow in your Nutshell account to help you get the tracking snippet up and running—no guesswork needed. The setup walks you through copying the snippet, adding it to your website, and testing to make sure everything is working.

1. Click View snippet

2. Copy the snippet and paste it into the <head> of every page of your website. If you’re using WordPress, you can use our plugin. The remaining steps may vary based on how your website was built, so contact our support team directly if additional guidance is needed.

3. After embedding the snippet, click the Run test button to confirm it’s working.

If it’s successfully installed, you’ll see this green Snippet detected status badge. Nutshell will begin collecting data automatically.

Additionally, you’ll see all these features in Nutshell with an Active state. You can click on any of the cards to go straight to that feature.

Note: Nutshell Chat will not be automatically updated—You’ll need to enable this separately by checking the Enable chat on your website checkbox in Chat > Setup

When will I see visitor data?

Visitors are anonymous until they submit a form on your website. Once a form is submitted, Nutshell matches that visit history to the lead so you can view their full activity timeline.

If you’re using Nutshell Forms or Connected Forms, this connection happens automatically. If you're using another form tool, lead creation still works—Nutshell will create a person record from the submission and attach any available visitor data.

Where to view your website traffic

You can view your overall traffic trends by clicking the Traffic analysis card or by navigating to Marketing > Website > Analytics. You'll see insights like:

  • Total site visits

  • Top visitor locations

  • Top visitors by industry
